Applying for Membership of the Society

Membership of the Society is open to the following health care professionals who have a relevant degree from a Higher Education Training Provider recognised by the Australian Government:  Chiropractors, Counsellors, Dentists, Dental Hygienists, Dental Therapists, Medical Practitioners, Midwives, Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Optometrists, Osteopaths, Pharmacists, Physiotherapists, Podiatrists, Psychologists, Social Workers and Speech Pathologists, with the proviso that:

  1. Such graduates are registered members of their profession where such a profession is a regulated profession or
  2. Where their profession is not regulated that they are a member of their pre-eminent professional body: as determined from time to time by Federal Council.

Subscription Fees

  • Membership for the full financial year is: $198 including GST.
  • New members joining between 1 January and 30 June pay: $99 Inc. GST.
  • NOTE: Renewal of membership occurs on the first of July annually.

Full Membership of the Society

After completing the training modules, and supervision of the Society’s Post Graduate Training in Clinical Hypnosis, students have two steps to undertake and pass to become Full Members of the Australian Society of Hypnosis (ASH).

Step One:
The first step is to submit one Case Report conforming to the prescribed Guidelines to the Secretary of the ASH Board of Education That Case Report is marked independently by two Case Report Examiners appointed by the Board and the average of the marks of the two Examiners must be 70% or higher for the candidate to be awarded a pass.

Step Two.
If the Case report is passed, then the student proceeds to a Viva. This is a one hour in person or zoom session conducted by two Full Members of the Society, to assess the student’s knowledge of professional and ethical issues, integration of hypnosis into their area of professional practice, practical clinical management etc; to clarify any issues identified in the Case Report and to observe a brief hypnotic demonstration on a naïve subject. If the Viva is passed, then that student’s name is given to the ASH Federal Council to ratify the Full Membership and the Full Membership Certificate is awarded.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

If a person wishes to join the Society, is a member of one of the professions listed as recognised for ASH membership and has completed training in hypnosis with another organisation, they should read the Society’s RPL document to see if that training is recognised under RPL. ASH Associate Members Wanting to Seek Full Membership Status Sometimes an Associate Member was not able to take the final two steps for Full Membership at the time, but wishes to do so later. That person should write to the Secretary Board of Education, with details of initial training, clinical experience and further training in the area of clinical hypnosis, for advice as to how to proceed to become a Full Member. That application would be brought to the Federal Council of the Society for consideration and determination.
